Maya Chitram Art Institute came into being in 1981. The institute has since been patronized by the District Magistrate as its President. Since its inception it has been rendering sincere and dedicated service for the growth and development of artistic talent among children and the youth by imparting them a sound method obtaining fine art and culture. In addition the institute has been holding art exhibition on a regular basis at Calcutta Information Centre and Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta, for providing its young talent adequate exposure in self expression.
The institute runs as non profit organization that has the primary objectives of preserving and fostering the spirit of art culture among the children and youth as its beckoning light has been rendering sincere and dedicated services to society on the one hand it is initiating young talents into the realm of fine art through a sound training method and on the other is providing scholarship and other assistance to the deserving and needy students who go for higher education.
Its most recent achievement is the inauguration of a permanent art gallery, the only one of its kind in North Bengal, in the name of the legendary dancer Uday Shankar by Shri K. V. Raghunath Reddy, the Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal on 10th February, 1997.
In course of time Uday Shankar Exhibition Hall desire to make an art archive in the birth centenary of Uday Shankar. The aim of the Institute is to create an universal language through art providing a common platform where the people of the world irrespective of the cast and creed can assemble for a finer sense. It also aim to create awareness about our heritage and social responsibilities.
